A special edition release, this Johnnie Walker XR is a 21 yo whisky, inspired by the handwritten blending notes of Sir Alexander Walker. The Johnnie Walker XR whisky was created in honour of Sir Alexander Walker’s Knighthood. It has no age statement, but each bottle has a serial number. Only one in ten thousand casks from the extensive Diageo inventory makes the grade. Johnnie Walker Blue Label blended whisky was created by Master Distiller Jim Beveridge to mirror the style of whiskies in the early 19 th century. This premium blended whisky is made from a mix of some old grain and malt whiskies. But, compared to the 21 yo XR Release that is only R600 more expensive and has a more beautiful bottle and an age statement, which one is worth your money? But in South Africa (and probably other places around the world) the Blue Label is the whisky that people aspire to. The Johnnie Walker King Georg V is about three times the price of the Blue Label and the John Walker Private Edition collection retails for over R7 000.

It is not the most expensive in the range. But the pinnacle of their stable is the Johnnie Walker Blue Label. Red and Black Label is universally available in most bars around the world. The history of their humble beginning in a grocery store and the growth to a global brand is well documented. Both premium blends from the Diageo stable. This time I am looking at a comparison between two releases from Johnnie Walker.
